What Coaching Is and Is Not
What Divorce Consultation and Coaching IS:
Support, skill building and guidance to help your navigate the intense emotions and high stress of the divorce process in adaptive ways that bring out the best in you and the process; in ways that minimize emotional and interpersonal/familial damage. Consultation aims to provide professional experience and knowledge towards solving divorce related issues. Coaching is a format designed to develop and implement strategies designed to assist you in defining and reaching your goals.
The goal is to clarify and support your specific needs, goals, and personal vision for your future and the future of your reconfigured family; and provide guidance on how to best achieve that positive future and healthy family relationships.
Our partnership together will include:
- Support so that you feel less alone and overwhelmed and instead empowered and hopeful; making your life a little easier as you navigate this complicated and difficult process.
- Awareness, understanding and management of the natural, yet strong emotions, affecting you during the divorce.
- Building skills that you can use to confidently communicate, calmly and assertively; negotiate effectively; listen keenly and astutely observe the impact of your interaction style.
- Developing skills to help you gather relevant information and resources; clarify key issues and interests; effectively plan and problem-solve; and make key decisions for yourself and your family.
- Guidance toward optimum coping, your best self and your vision of the future.
What Divorce Consultation and Coaching IS NOT:
- It is not psychotherapy or treatment of diagnosed mental conditions. Neither an assessment nor a diagnosis is completed and there is no focus on treatment of symptoms or exploration of your early history and development.
- While there are some similarities between coaching and psychotherapy in the use of basic counseling skills and knowledge of human behavior and change, psychotherapy involves the treatment of mental conditions, often reimbursed through insurance. Coaching is not a service reimbursed through health insurance and is not a health service. Goals of psychotherapy involve alleviation of symptoms of mental health conditions and addressing emotional and behavioral dysfunctions and vulnerabilities.
- It is not a divorce mediation service. It will not result in a negotiated agreement to be reviewed by an attorney or court .
- Since the roles of coach, psychotherapist, and mediator are different, it would be a potential conflict to have more than one role with any particular client. This could create confusion and a potential conflict of interest. As such, you can expect that I would not serve in more than one role in offering services to you, whether at the same time, or sequentially. I would be happy to refer you to other professionals if we determine together that you could benefit from a service other than the one I provide.
